This week we had a film crew from Galileo, Pro 7 visiting GISSV - more information on topic and when the feature will be aired will follow.

Dear school community,

The past week was dedicated to parent participation at GISSV. A big thank you to Barbara Albrethsen-Keck and her team for helping actively to prepare the elections of the new parent representatives by informing, providing materials, etc.. Thank you also to the teachers for sending out invitations, preparing agendas together with parents, moderating the meetings, introducing subjects and curricula and refreshing the communication between parents and teachers after the summer break.

Visitors of the office probably saw that there is a new, friendly face at the front desk: Welcome to Silvia Mehlo, who is a new staff member in the office and is

supporting the staff.

Welcome also to Marianne Haesloop and Jutta Fugmann to the Berkeley team.

Marianne Haeslop will support the afternoon team and Jutta Fugmann will teach music in elementary school.

I wish all of you a nice long weekend!

Martin Fugmann

Principal

Congratulations to all parent representatives who were elected during the past parent nights. The first meeting of the Parents Association will take place on Wednesday, September 9 at 8am in the library. For a complete list of all parent representatives please see here à link

News from the Parent Association / Elternbeirat

Congratulations to all the newly elected parent representatives! The first meeting of the Parent Association will be held on Thursday, September 9th, at 8:00 in the library on Easy Street Campus. Berkeley parent representatives will be able to call in. A separate invitation will follow.

Volunteering at GISSV

  • We ask every family to contribute 20 work hours per school year – this is fun, improves the school life, and helps to keep our costs down!
  • Your homeroom teacher distributed the ‘Volunteer Information Form’ à link. The information that you give us will help to match volunteers and projects more easily. Please fill out the form (one per family) and return it to the homeroom teacher, who will hand them in to the office.
  • Please record your volunteer hours in the ‘Volunteer Hour Record’ binder in the library.

Fundraising:

We will continue to promote fundraising programs that solicit donations from stores and businesses that you frequent. These programs are described in detail in our fundraising brochure à link. The most popular programs are:

  • escrip
  • Whole Foods Grocery Cards
  • Box Tops
  • Bottle/can recycling

Guest Student looking for Host Family

Dear parents,

My name is Christian Heckemann.

I am a student from Dresden, Germany, and I will stay here for, as so far planed, the schoolyear at the 11. grade of the GISSV.

About 3 years ago I already visited this school for 3 months during an exchange program of my school, the Marie-Curie High School and the GISSV. At this time I lived with Stefano Cestellos-Blanco and his family (there is his step-dad Benjamin Soto). Right now I live there again but because of shortage of space and plans of the Cestellos-Blanco family I am only able to stay till the 24. September 2010.

That's why I strongly search for a host family which could take my from this point until July 2011.

If you want to send your child for maybe a longer period to Germany my family is also willing to take somebody. We have a large flat and he or she could get his or her own room.

Yes, I would be very happy if there is somebody of you interested.

Thank you very much!

Christian Heckemann

SOLANO STROLL

On Sunday, September 12, GISSV's Berkeley campus will once again participate in Berkeley/Albany's annual Solano Stroll. The Solano Stroll is a large (26 blocks) street festival with over 500 vendors, non-profit organizations, food booths and entertainers. This event will provide great exposure for GISSV Berkeley's growing campus!

The fun begins at 10 am with the opening of Solano Avenue businesses and Stroll booths and the kick-off is the theme parade with about 100 groups. After the parade, you can visit one of 75 entertainers, 50 food booths, 150 juried arts and crafters, games, and almost 200 community non-profit and government organizations. You will hear the best in local music, dance and other performances and absolutely stunning costumes from all over the globe

This is a family event, featuring a special area set aside just for kids that offer giant slides, carnival games, clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers, face painters and magicians.

Please stop by GISSV's booth….the attached map shows the exact location -> link (around 1241 Solano Street, in front of the Frances Apartments and across from Zarri's Deli). Please contact Pamela Mead at berkeley@gissv.org or pmead@gissv.org if you are interested in working at the booth for an hour or two.

Check out the Solano Stroll website at: www.solanoavenueassn.org for more information. Hope to see you there!
