January 20 - February 26

The events in Haiti were and are of great concern to our students, their teachers and their families. For that reason, they decided to do their small part to help Haiti rebuild. So on Wednesday, January 20th, we kicked off our Penny Madness Drive for the Haitian earthquake victims. During the following four weeks (until February 26) we will put up jugs where you can donate money that will go to a different charity each week. This week we will donate all funds to “Doctors without Borders” who will spend 87% directly to relief efforts in Haiti. The concept works as follows:
There will be four jugs, one for Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary school (Preschool & K-4), one for Middle school (5-8), one for High School (9-12) and one for the staff. Each team scores points based on the number of pennies they have, where they will receive negative points for anything other than pennies. For example, $5 are 500 negative points, $10 are 1000 negative points. The idea is to put as many pennies as possible into your respective bin and any other denomination into your competitors' bins. Every Wednesday money will be counted and sent to the chosen charity of the week. The leading team will be announced thereafter. You can find the bins in front of the Multipurpose room before and after school and in front of the teachers' lounge during the school day. Please help the cause and donate as much as possible, you can make checks payable to the GISSV.

Last Wednesday the Penny Drive, organized by 11th and 8th grade came to its end. The weekly result was an astounding $ 1,026 going to UNICEF, who pledged to give 100% of the donations received directly to Haiti.

Here are the overall end results:

Altogether, we were able to raise over $ 2,700!

The students from 11th and 8th grade want to thank all the students, parents, and teachers who contributed to helping the victims of the Haitian earthquake. The elementary school students can now look forward to a sweet prize, which they will receive this week. Congratulations and thanks again!

January 29 - Update by students Grades 8 & 11:

As you are hopefully aware, GISSV students are currently running a big fund raiser to help the earthquake victims of Haiti. After one week of steady donations we have been able to raise the amazing amount of $ 1122.21! We truly thank all parents, students, and staff for supporting Haiti. We hope to keep this great momentum through the entire fund raiser until it ends of Feb 26.

Previous week: Doctors without Borders (87.3%)
Week 2: Save the Children (91.4%)
Week 3: Hope for Haiti (98.2%)
Week 4: UNICEF (100%)

We are hoping that you will continue to be as generous as last week.
